Platesetter Inspector

Dot Inspector control strip

This is a set of control strips designed to track plate setter in it's production (press curved) condition. A single file contains 4 pages.
A pdf file is prepared for CMYKOVG separation.

Plate setter Linearization Control Strips: Dot Inspector L, D, E targets

The purpose of the Linearization control strip is to assess the plate setter repeatability/variation from day to day and week to week. This assessment ensures the plate setter (in it's baseline condition) is consistent over time. A second type of control strip (G7/TVI plate control strip can be used to ensure the plate has been imaged with the correct press tone reproduction curve, see below for more information.

For plate setter linearization, one of the following control strips needs to be used:

Dot Inspector L  — shorter version without checker test ("L" for Linearization)

Dot Inspector L

Dot Inspector L patches: 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 95, 98%

Dot Inspector D — longer version that includes 5 checker tests for 2400 dpi resolution

Dot Inspector E — longer version that includes 5 checker tests for 2540 dpi resolution

Dot Inspector D or E patches: 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 95, 98% + checker tests: 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 pixels

CAUTION: Linearization control strip must be processed with plate linearization curve on and press G7/dot gain (TVI/TRC) compensation curve off.

Plate setter G7/TVI Control Strips: Dot Inspector C target

The purpose of the G7/TVI plate control strip is to assess that the curve on the plate is correct for the given press process. We have designed a second strip for this purpose.

Assess plate for correct G7/dot gain compensation curve, use this control strip

Dot Inspector C - enables checking current press curves ("C" for Curved)

CAUTION:  This control strip must be processed as a regular job - with press compensation curves on.  Since you are going to measure plate, not actual printed version of this target -  strip may be placed in a non-printing area.

How to place strips on the plate?

Depending on your RIP this might be done in a different way - but in most cases it is possible

We have documented some typical workflow examples:

Agfa Apogee RIP

Apogee makes it easy because the properties of each object can be defined - two control strips can be placed next to another in a non-printed area on the outside of the plate area.

It is very easy to measure control strips positioned like this.

How to measure?

There are dedicated plate measurements instruments on the market - we strongly advise using them to assess plate performance. Some spectrodensitometers can be configured to perform this task, please make sure to follow the directions for the given spectrophotometer.

ICPlate2 Instrument measures control strip in a minute or so.

For many plate users, the performance requirements allow for a spectrophotometer to make the plate measurement, despite some potential inaccuracies.

X-Rite i1Pro2                                                                      X-Rite eXact Scan

Dot Inspector Control strips are designed to make it possible to scan the target with spectrophotometers (like X-Rite eXact Scan, i1 Pro 1/2, Techkon SpectraDens or others).

ChromaChecker InstrumentDrive software is available to measure, analyze and upload Dot Inspector measurements to your ChromaChecker account. (March 2018)

Bar Codes

To measure plates with G7/TVI compensation curves for the CMYK process, eight measurements are required, for an extended color process like CMYKOGV - as many as 14 measurements are required! In order to make the job easier to navigate and avoid mistakes, ChromaChecker InstrumentDrive can be configured with a bar code reader which will streamline this process by loading the correct measurement settings allowing the user to scan the barcode and then measure the control strip with the measurement device so the system will correctly interpret the bar and its targeted color values.
